Instructions for Window Pane Replacement – Window Pane Replacement
The first thing you will need to do is to get the replacement glass for the window. The replacement should be 1/8 smaller, both in width and length, to the size of your window. Make sure that you measure carefully and accurately to avoid making mistakes.
Next, you will need to do is to take out the broken window pane. Put on your work gloves and goggles to keep you protected. Remove the window sash and lay it flat on your work area, making sure that the surface is wide enough to accommodate it. If only a small part of the glass is damaged, you will need to break it in order to take it out.
Apply the masking tape on the broken window and put a towel over the glass before hitting it with the hammer. That way, the glass will break without shattering. Once the broken window pane is in pieces, slowly slide these out from the window.
Use the chisel or the screwdriver to scrape off the old glazing compound on the window, taking out the installed glaziers points (small pieces of metal that hold the glass in place) using long-nosed pliers along the way. Sand the frame in order to remove any glazing compound still remaining, making sure that the sanding is clean and smooth in order for the new window pane to fit properly.
Finishing Touches – Window Pane Replacement
With the paintbrush, apply the primer on the wood. Once the paint dries, apply the putty, with the putty knife, on the frame. Carefully slide in the replacement glass into the frame, making sure to press it down on the putty.
Use the new glaziers points to hold the glass in place. The small pieces of metal should be installed on all sides of the window pane, about 8 inches apart from each other at a time, to make sure that it holds the glass securely.
Roll some more putty on your fingers. Press this into the seam between the replacement window pane and the frame and use the edge of the putty knife to push it firmly into place, making sure that it is applied smoothly.
Attempt to do window pane replacement if you’ve had previous experience in doing DIY tasks around the house, or you may end up having an accident or damaging the window frame further.
